First Sailfish Of The Year

Event Start Date: 2023/04/06

2023/04/06

We enjoyed our emerald, green water all week. The water temperature rose from 68.9 to 76.8 degrees during the period. We had good winds with bait schools each day. The pier was crowded as we are in the last couple of weeks of spring break. We had great catches of Pompano and Spanish Mackerel. Five King Mackerel were decked, and the first Sailfish of the year was caught. There was also Jack Crevalle, Red Drum, Black Drum, lots of Cigar minnows and huge Squid caught.

We are 5 days into the Cobia Tournament with no fish caught during the week. The details and rules are listed below. We are having technical issues with the registration page so if you were registered in last year’s tournament, you are automatically registered this year. If you need to register and cannot get the website to work, TEXT or Email me your Name, E-mail address and Phone number and I will get you registered. Text to 770-265-2879 or E-mail @ SLP053@bellsouth.net

Hachid is showing his skills as he got the first Cobia last week (before the tournament began) and this week on Saturday, brought the first Sailfish to the pier. The last couple of years, we have not seen the numbers of Sailfish as we did for several years so this is encouraging. The fish was released so hopefully some other angler will have an opportunity in the future.

King Mackerel bites were scattered and few. There were 2 nice fish caught on Friday. Stacy decked a 17-pound and Hunter a 23-pound King. Saturday, Danny from Atlanta decked two “schoolies”. After a dead spell, Ron caught a 20-pound fish this morning. There were a couple other fish hooked during the week but lost. Fish were caught both on bait and lures.

Spanish Mackerel have been on the chew all week. Early and late in the day was the best bite with some scattered throughout the day. Lures and bait worked. Spanish up to 5-pounds were decked but the majority were less than 2-pounds. Here is one of the nicer ones caught by Jacob H:

Pompano have been thick most of the week. Many anglers went home with their daily limit often during the period. Fishbite and fresh Sand Flea combo on a set rig as well as jigs were the go-to tackle. Here are a few shots of fish George and Brenda got.

Casey W. worked on the Red Drum again. A Carolina rig with either a live Cigar minnow or fresh Squid were a shoo-in for a Red to bite. Casey got these two on Thursday.
